Grounds/ maintenance Person

Definition                                                                                                      

 

Under general supervision of the District Manager the grounds person performs the duties in effecting day-to-day operation, a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenances, construction and beautification of cemetery grounds, buildings and other facilities and equipment; open and close graves; and to do related work as required.

 

Hours and Salary

Monday thru Friday: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm and weekend as directed.

$18 per hour subject to experience, with a three-month probation period.

 

A.    Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1.      Adhere to and enforce state and local laws and District regulations relating to the operation of the District Cemetery.

2.      Maintenance and upkeep of the lawns, shrubs, trees, streets, and buildings operates and maintains all types of mowers and turf maintenance equipment.

3.      Plant, transplant, remove, fertilize, cultivate, water, prune and spray trees, flowers and shrubs; mow, trim, water and fertilize lawns as per proper health and safety instruction.

4.      Clean and perform minor repairs to District Buildings and related facilities.

5.      Operate trucks and other construction, maintenance and beautification equipment used in cemetery operation.

6.      Supervise and participate in the digging of graves, install concrete grave liners and vaults, and setting up of equipment for funeral services, sets up lowering device, chairs and chapel for funeral service.

7.      Sell burial lots and maintain maps and records when district manager is out of the office.

8.      Maintain records of cash and checks received from sales services when district manager is out of the office.

9.      Keep employee safety meeting records.

10.  Maintain and make minor repairs to equipment.

11.  Keep tools and equipment in safe and organized working condition.

12.  Pick up supplies.

13.  Install and repair sprinkler systems, concrete work, including setting of markers and monuments.

14.  Operate backhoe, jackhammer and compressor, small and large tractors, dirt trailers, vault-mobile and a variety of hand tools used in the opening and closing of graves.

15.  Other duties as assigned by the District Manager.

16.  Keep District Manager informed of Cemetery operations, including status of projects and problems

 

 

B.     Employment Standards

Knowledge of:

1.      Full and comprehensive knowledge of the cemetery laws as outlined in the California Health and Safety Code.

2.      Cemetery District rules and regulations.

3.      Proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses.

4.      Construction and maintenance material, procedures, and equipment with reference to cemetery operations.

5.      Cement work and general maintenance of buildings and grounds.

6.      Materials, equipment, and practices involve layout, opening and closing of graves.

7.      Basic equipment maintenance methods and terminology.

8.      Methods, tools, techniques and supplies in gardening and maintenance work.

9.      Methods, tools, techniques, and supplies used in the opening and closing of graves.

10.  Basic characteristics of plant pests and diseases and techniques for their control.

11.  Safe work practices.

 

Ability to:

1.      Recognize and take proper precautions against plant and insect diseases and pests.

2.      Operate and supervise the operation of all types of ground maintenance and cemetery equipment.

3.      Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction and beautification of cemetery grounds, building and other facilities.

4.      Read and maintain cemetery plot maps, card files and other cemetery records.

5.      Use a computer to locate information concerning burials and pre-need arrangements.

6.      Plan and supervise the work of others.

7.      Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

8.      Work cooperatively with others.

9.      Establish and maintain good public relations.

10.  Perform heavy manual labor and lift a minimum of 75 pounds.

 

Requirements:

1.      Must possess valid California certified applicator’s license for turf and ornamentals.

2.      Must be Bondable.

3.      Must possess a valid California Driver’s license.
